Blog Love 8.1

with one comment

Micah Tillman and a Short History of Marriage. Micah’s recent posts on marriage have reminded me of my own post here about getting government out of the marriage business.

The Lostpedia Blog’s guide to the “Lost Rewatch” which starts today: “The rewatch will span from June 1 to January 3, and during this time we will watch all 103 hours of Lost.”  The various online fan communities are gearing up to make this a big thing, with daily posts across the various blogs about the new things people are gleaning from rewatching old episodes.  People are so invested in this show.  It seems like a pretty good way to get yourself ready emotionally and narratively for the last season.  And watching the episodes on DVD is really how they’re best enjoyed.  Man, how good was Season 1?  So good.

8.2 to follow.

Monday Morning Time Travel

without comments

I had a dream about LOST last night.  Locke was in the past and  about to try to change something he observed his younger self doing (letting Helen leave).  As soon as he did, he was rendered unobservable to the people in that timeline and transported to a different setting (a wedding/baseball game) where people could see and talk to him.  The in-dream implication to me was that he’s only allowed to interact with people in the past if his actions there cannot change the course of history.  Of course, this isn’t time theory as expressed on LOST, but it was fun to dream about.  I’m not sure why the wedding turned into a baseball exhibition, but I think it had to do with Kate’s in-dream fiancee.

April 15 LOST impressions/spoilers etc.

without comments

Last week when what’s her name asked Lapidus about what lies in the shadow of the statue, I figured there’s a third faction in play that we don’t know about.  This week we saw these people kidnap Miles in a flashback.   Sure, they could be on Team Linus, but I don’t think so.

I think they are the offspring off the Oceanic 815 survivors who came back to the 70s.  They are the Infinity, Inc. of the BadRobotverse, sired in the 70s and growing up around the same time as their parents on their parents’ timeline as originally experienced.

LOST April 8th tiny recap and spoilers

with one comment

When Des was beating the crap out of Ben, I felt like I was Wii boxing right along with him.

How sad to see a slightly less evil Ben pushing Alex on the swing.  Almost evoked some sympathy for the devil.

John Locke is in control.  Finally.

Okay, A TON to like about this one.  But all I want to draw attention to is the last scene.  John Locke, badass.

Pop Culture Buzz Redux

I know I’ve been milking this, but people are still finding their way here by searching for Desmond Hume’s sunglasses.  They’re Euclids by Edward Beiner.  And they are awesome.

Tonight’s the premiere of the third incarnation of David Letterman’s old show.  I’m pretty sure I saw the old Carson curtain behind him in a promo last week.  Even though Carson never had that time-slot, the show is set in the same studio space Carson used before moving to Burbank, so there’s already some throwback continuity stuff built in.

The Life and Death of Jeremy (John Locke) Bentham

with one comment

Tonight’s episodes of LOST is “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham” and promises the return of John Locke (Jeremy Bentham is his off-island alias) to the land of the living.  The historic Jeremy Bentham, you may recall, was an English philosopher who advanced the concept of utilitarianism.   Will we hear Locke talk about “the greatest good for the greatest number” in his quest to convince the Oceanic 6 to come back to the Island?

My favorite thing about the real Bentham?  His Auto-Icon.

Yes, his will requested that his body be preserved in a wooden box (ahem) and displayed in the boardroom of University College London so that decision-makers would be forever influenced by his presence.  Ever the utilitarian, his corpse became a tool for the social order he envisioned.  (Ahem). His head ended up rotting and getting replaced, but the rest of him is there.

My favorite, favorite thing about all of this?  The Bentham Cam.  I can’t find it online anymore, but it was up during my undergrad days.

See also the Panopticon, Bentham’s design for a prison that allows “ an observer to observe (-opticon) all (pan-) prisoners without the prisoners being able to tell whether they are being watched, thereby conveying what one architect has called the ’sentiment of an invisible omniscience.’”  Fits nicely into the LOST mythos.

Desmond’s Sunglasses: Make and Model Revealed?

with 2 comments

lost-glasses_l

Someone has just commented on a previous post that the Dez glasses from a few episodes ago are the Euclid frames by Edward Beiner.

Can anyone varify?  Or is this another case of LOST yeilding more questions than answers???

UPDATE:  Entertainment Weekly seems to have the scoop.

LOST Pregame

Will we finally succeed in our quest to determine the make and model of Desmond’s wicked cool sunglasses?

Will Kate kill Ben?  Will Kate kill Jack?  Will Sayid kill everyone?  How many times will Kate say “I am keeping my son!”?

I haven’t seen the previews for tonight’s episode yet, but given the rhythm of the season, I think we’re about due for Desmond-centric offering, which is fine by me.  He’s a superhero.

Dispatches From The Island

Many of you are LOST fans.  Even if you’re not, Jorge (Hugo “Hurley” Reyes) Garcia’s blog is a must read.  I’ve been reading it for a while now, and I can’t believe I didn’t think until today to add it to my blogroll.  Browse his archives, too.  Gems.  Priceless gems.
